Brett Walker featured in Spotlight 7

This week in Spotlight 7 we feature the work of Brett Walker as chosen by guest curator and Week 17 artist Bukutgirl, aka Liz Kasameyer. This week represented a first for Spotlight 7, as it featured a phone interview instead of the traditional email interview. Bukutgirl found the interview to be an adventure unto itself, with midnight phone calls across the Atlantic and more like it.

Brett has lived all over the world, and traveled across the seas for many years in the Greek Merchant Marine. Angola, Belgium, Brazil, France, Italy and of course London itself. I can't do justice to either the interview or the images with a few short words. Here's an excerpt from Bukutgirl's interview of/ story about Brett Walker.

3) What is your process when you got out to shoot? Do you go out with a purpose or do you just shoot and let the shots call out to you when you’re editing?
Brett has a formal job, but it allows him a lot of time out in the streets to shoot, he says he shoots on average 400 frames a day, and counts himself lucky if he likes one. He shoots with a wide angle lens and likes to basically shoot street candids, catching the honest moments of a person’s day when they are simply existing. He doesn’t go out with a goal for a certain scene, just goes out to see what the streets will bring him. He said that sometimes he’ll see someone and they fit a memory or an idea, and he’ll try to shoot them to that end, like seeing a man in a market who fits his vision of what his father might have looked like. He shoots often from the hip, afraid to look down to see if he’s “killed it or simply wounded it” – referring to the shot that is, and when a great shot shows up everything else is out of the window for the day, nothing else will do but to go home and edit. In describing the editing process, and image selection he said that he’ll start playing with something in photoshop, not even sure what will come out of it and the image guides his work from there, often dumping him at the end with a shocked feeling that he hadn’t even really realized that that was what needed to come out or that that moment was inside.

Michael Bowman (Desolate Places): Spotlight 7 Week 4

Week 4 interview, which featured Duff Suds, now known as Desolate Places.

1) Where are you from originally and when did you first become interested in photography?

I am born and raised in the Hudson Valley of New York. I was born in Peekskill and raised from day 1 in the small town of Cold Spring. I left for a while, but I am currently living there.

I first became interested in photography when I was a kid, messing around with my brother's Polaroid and later his SLR. As I got older the camera became sort of an accessory to my exploring, a way to document buildings and places I found. If I had to point to one moment when I knew that photography would be a lifelong passion it would be the first time that I climbed Breakneck Mountain in the Hudson Highlands as a teen. It was completely accidental, we were in the woods exploring the ruins of the Cornish Estate at the base of Breakneck and ventured too far up a trail. Once we saw how high up we were, we kept going. To make a long story short we ended up at the top of this very large precipice to watch the sunset. Luckily I had my camera with me, no flashlight, but I had a point and shoot. Those are still some of my favorite images, and the experience inspired me to take photography more seriously.

2) What are you thinking and feeling when you're talking to some of these people you've photographed?

It all depends on the person and their story. Since I have been engaging people for portraits I have heard just about every circumstance in life described in detail. From people who have managed to turn their lives around, to people who pray for the end. As a result it can be an emotional roller-coaster, and I have asked myself many times why I seek out these faces and their stories. The closest I have come to explaining it is that in their faces and in their histories I look to find a little bit of the pain that I carry within me…and hopefully by telling their story or by taking an image I can give that some meaning. I can honestly say that in every portrait I take there is a lot of me on the other end of the lens.

3) Your subjects seem like they would be hard to convince to let you take their photo. How do you appeal to them?

I appeal to them by not judging a book by its cover. I have found that the people who seem hard to convince or "unapproachable" are the easiest to get in front of the lens and to relate to. A good example would be the man in "From the depths of my soul" who I encountered not far from my home. When I first asked him if I could take his photo he was adamant that he would never do it. A few seconds later he had changed his mind. I still see him from time-to-time and I asked him once what made him change his mind. His reply was "nobody has ever asked me before."

Other times it's just a matter of sitting and talking to someone. Very rarely do I approach a subject with my camera out. I will sit and talk to someone, sometimes for hours, until they feel comfortable. Don't get me wrong, even then there might not be any way of convincing someone to let you shoot them, but I understand it's their choice and I respect it. What it all comes down to, on the street or in the studio, is whether the subject feels comfortable with the photographer. Being unassuming, non-judging and acknowledging goes a long
way.

And lastly, no matter if your successful or fail, always shake their hand.

4) What do you want people to learn about the people you photograph?

It's not so much what I want people to learn, I just want people to see them. There is nothing like being invisible. Whether someone is sick, addicted, homeless, etc… what it all comes down to is that they are living, breathing people. They are somebody's parent, kid, sibling and somewhere along the line they got dealt a bad hand. It's so much easier to go on with our lives and pretend that these people don't exist. Ignorance is bliss.

Hopefully, by telling a story and taking a portrait it gives a face to someone who otherwise may have faded into history anonymously.

5) Out of the photos we've chosen here, which portrait means the most to you and why?

It would definitely be A man going around taking names. It was taken during my first trip cross country, after I had decided to check out of my normal life for a while. I was trying to sort out my own issues, figure out what I wanted from life and basically break all of the old connections and connotations and start new. I was stopping in every urban area I could find, stopping to shoot portraits of the people I was meeting and about a month into the trip I found myself in Albuquerque, New Mexico in line at a soup kitchen. To make a long story short I was taught a lesson in boundaries. I didn't mind my surroundings, nor listen to common sense and I ended up at the wrong end of a pistol. Anyway, that portrait was the first thing I took after that ordeal. To say that it was a wake up call is an understatement and since then the man in that portrait has always been a reminder to me, a symbol of that point in my life.

6) If you could photograph one living person, who would it be?

If I had been asked this six months ago it would have been Pete Seeger, who lives in the Hudson Valley. Thanks to YES! Magazine that recently became a reality.

Now I would have to say Bob Dylan. I would love to attempt to capture him on film.

7) What's your favorite lens/camera for taking portraits?

For street portraiture I stick pretty much straight-forward with my Canon Xti and the Canon 17-85mm zoom. The funny thing is, I don't go out looking to shoot portraits so my favorite lens/camera is what I happen to be carrying at the time, whether it's the 50mm 1.4 or even the Holga.

8) If we told you that we were going to buy you any camera of your choice, what would it be?

Well if it's on your dime I would have to say a Sinar F1 or F2 View Camera. I had the opportunity to use a large format camera doing Habs/Haer documentation and I would love to experiment with one for large format portraiture.

But I would settle for a Canon Mark II. When can I expect delivery?

9) Show us your favorite photograph on Flickr.

My favorite photograph on Flickr would have to be Tom Stone's portrait of Beavis. It is so raw, so real, so disturbing…and when you scroll down to see him as a young child…so utterly fucking heart-breaking.

10) Are you planning an exhibition with these portraits, or any future projects we'd like to hear about?

In the past I have exhibited some of my portraiture locally and hope to have a small exhibition later in the year here in the Hudson Valley. Although I enjoy displaying my work, my portraits mean a great deal to me…it was an ordeal just to convince myself to display them on Flickr.

As far as future projects, people can look for images from my Pete Seeger shoot in the upcoming spring issue of YES! Magazine as well as more postings on my Flickr space.

Mark Crosby (Paint Monkey): Spotlight 7 Interview, Week 3

Please welcome for our 3rd week of Spotlight Seven, Paint Monkey.

1) Where are you from and where do you live now?

I was born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England, I currently reside on a smaller Island, Nantucket, Massachusetts US and A

2) How does the area where you live influence your photography?

It's funny because Nantucket is one of those tourist destinations that is photographed to DEATH! It's only 18 miles wide and has a limited number of landmarks/beauty spots, of which I've seen a million photographs, mostly all the same. That led me to start experimenting with different cameras, different film, cross processing etc. I don't know of anyone that owned a HOLGA out here until I started shooting with one. I try to get a different take on such an oft photographed place.

3) Can you show us an early photograph that you took which made you really excited about photography?

Tough one, any photo's I took pre-flickr are no longer in my possession so I think I'll have to go with this one. It led me into the wonderful world of film, and film cameras....there's just something magical about film, I can't put my finger on it.

4) Talk about the 365 Nantucketers project seen here.

The 365 Nantucketers project was an Idea borrowed from the 365britons by Monkey Magic and friends, (you might notice a few of Eamon's shots in there.) Nantucket is such a seasonal place, the population swells from roughly 10,000 to 50,000 during the summer so I thought it would be an interesting project to document the 365ers, the people who live and work here year round, a tough breed I can tell ya!
So together with the newly formed Nantucket Photography Club we're setting out to capture 365 portraits by the fall and to have a show accompanied by a book at the end of it all. It's also a project to try and capture the fabric of the Island, which has changed so much in recent years and also to show the summer residents the heartbeat that keeps this place going, year round....and because the people change we might carry it on year after year.

5) Are there any photographers that you admire or seek to emulate?

I wouldn't say I try to emulate any photographers, but do take a lend of others ideas and play with them in order to find my own "groove". If I had a favorite right at this moment in time it would be Henri Cartier Bresson. I just look at his shots and think..."how?" He manages to get "that" shot before my mind and fingers would have time to react....simply amazing.

6) What do you find most challenging in regards to photography?

Everything! haha, I've only be shooting seriously for the past 2 years, maybe less, but everything is a challenge, I'm learning something new everyday but sometimes it doesn't stick...it takes a while to sink in with me! Don't get me wrong, it may be challenging but I love it, I love very second of it.

7) Talk about one of the photos we chose for Spotlight Seven.

Out of the 10 you chose I'm going to go with this one as it's the only one that isn't posed. That Cartier Bresson moment. It is of a Brasillian guy that works with me. I love the realness of the photo, although he notices the camera he hasn't had time to react to it yet. Taken with a Contax G1 f/2.8 28mm. AGFA Ultra 100.

8) What’s your favorite lens/camera for taking portraits?

I'd have to say my Hasselblad 503cx and 80mm Planar T*.... but a close second would be my Nikon D-80 and Nikkor 50mm f/1.4.


9) One person living right now that you'd like to have an hour to sit and take portraits of?

wow....just one?!!! that's a tough one....but it would have to be the Dalai Lama...something tells me that I might not end up taking many photographs in that hour ;)

10) Show us a photo on flickr that you wish you had taken.

This shot of the Brooklyn bridge, we've all seen a million photo's of it, this one is just that little bit different, just enough to make you question it's location....just for a second.

ورغم ان اليهود كانوا أول ضحايا العنصريه النازية ، وبعضها الآخر هدفا للموت وشملت عشرات الالاف من الروما (الغجر) وعلى الاقل 200000 المعوق عقليا او جسديا الناس. كما طغيان النازي الانتشار في أنحاء أوروبا ، للاضطهاد وقتل الملايين من الشعوب الاخرى. اكثر من ثلاثة ملايين من اسرى الحرب السوفيات قتلوا أو ماتوا من الجوع والمرض ، او اساءة المعامله. النازيون قتل عشرات الالاف من غير اليهود البولنديه والفكريه والزعماء الدينيين ، وترحيل الملايين من المواطنين السوفيات والبولنديه لالسخره. ومنذ السنوات الاولى للنظام النازي ، مثليون جنسيا وغيرها من الاجراءات التي يتعين ان تكون غير مقبولة اجتماعيا للاضطهاد. الالاف من المعارضين السياسيين (بما فيها الشيوعيون ، والاشتراكيون ، والنقابيين والمعارضين الدينيين (مثل شهود يهوه) كما تم استهداف. العديد من هؤلاء الافراد لقوا حتفهم نتيجة للحبس وسوء المعامله.

الجمعية العامة للامم المتحدة تؤكد من جديد ان 'محرقه اليهود ، مما أدى الى مقتل ثلث الشعب اليهودي الى جانب اعضاء لا يحصى من الاقليات الاخرى ، الى الأبد تحذيرا لجميع الناس من مخاطر الكراهية والتعصب والعنصريه والتحامل ".

Selv om jødene var hovedmålet for nazistene rasisme, ble også andre folkegrupper forfulgt og drept. Titusenvis av Romanifolket og minst 200 000 fysisk og psykisk utviklingshemmede døde. Nazistene myrdet millioner av mennesker, etterhvert som de erobret nye deler av Europa. Mer enn 3 millioner sovjetiske krigsfanger ble drept, eller døde av sult, sykdom eller dårlig behandling. Titusenvis av polske intellektuelle, og religiøse ledere, ble også drept. Millioner ble deportert som slaver. Helt fra nazistene kom til makten ble homofile og andre sosialt uaksepterte forfulgt. Tusenvis av politiske (kommunister, sosialister og fagforeningsfolk) og religiøse (f eks Jehovas Vitner) ble også forfulgt. Mange døde som et resultat av fengsling og mishandling.

FNs Generalforsamling stadfester at 'Holocaust, som resulterte i myrderiet av en tredel av det jødiske folk, i tillegg til utallige medlemmer av andre minoriteter, vil for alltid være en advarsel om farene ved hat, bigotteri, rasisme og fremmedfrykt.'

1) When and why did you start taking so many street portraits of random people, and how do you initially approach them?
Here is the first Street Portrait I took. Up to then it never occurred to me that I could simple approach someone on the street and take their photo.

I've always been interested in portraits and I was curious to see if I would be able to capture the look that first drew me to the person.

As for the technique in asking, it's no big deal. Simply ask.

Approaching people and making them feel comfortable is second nature to me, something I developed while being a waiter and a barman.

2) Can you talk a bit about your One Hour Photo and 100 People projects youv'e worked on?
While drinking with Nic0 one night we decided to photograph as many people as we could in a few hours. There was no plan, just photograph anybody that happened to walk past. At the time I think we both had new camera and thought it would be a good way to get more comfortable with them. Looking back at the images now, I'm not too comfortable with them and would love to try it again, this time I'd use film though.

For me, the one hour photo project was a little more serious. Good editing can make a photographer look good (take 1000 pictures, choose one, repeat), I wanted to see if I could shoot a roll in an hour and be happy to make the images public. Putting yourself under pressure, makes you try harder and for me a test to see if I could really use a camera.

3) Show us an an example of a photograph that you took which made you really excited about photography?
The last image I took made me excited about photography, when I'm not excited about taking a photo, I'll give up.

4) You use several camera's for your street portraiture, what's your preference?
The F90X is probably the camera most suitable. Auto focus, auto exposure, nothing much to it other than point and shoot.

Not too bothered with it much these days, yes, it's a great challenge but not too exciting.

5) There are several examples of portraits people take of you in your stream. Are those taken by random people?
I photograph people, and I allow others to view them and comment on them as they please.

Getting other people to photograph puts things in perspective almost everybody I ask has a digital SLR around their neck

6) Pick one of the portraits we chose for Spotlight Seven and tell us more about it.
Sometimes people ask me why I want to take their photo and I normally have the right answers to give to make them feel more comfortable.

This girl was different, I spotted her while photographing someone else but knew there was no rush.

She never moved, not even when I asked. Just nodded her head.

People say that the person who photographs interferes with life around them, and I agree most of the time.

Just not this time.

7) Have you ever experienced a time where photography left you unfulfilled or lost it's excitement for you, and what did you do to reinvigorate and motivate yourself?
I bring a camera with me all the time, if I'm not in the mood, then I just wont take it out. Ive never found myself holding a camera when I didn't want to shoot.

The excitement has not gone and imagine it will be some time before it does

Every few months I try something new, and have moved from DSLR back to a Film SLR to rangefinder and now to developing my own. There is always something new to try and something to get right
I'm not looking to get a perfect image, I'm looking to learn how to get it good.

8) You've amassed quite a deal of compelling street portraits, is there a goal for you or a direction you want to move in regards to this work?
Yes, there are two goals

a) To collect 1000 photographs of strangers that I'm happy with.

b) To get a portrait into the National Portrait Gallery Photographic Prize within 10 years.

9) Show us the work of a photographer you deeply admire on flickr.
There are many I admire on Flickr, each one stands out in a different respect, but I do have a favourite photograph, here.
It the most honest and complementary photograph I have seen.

This is a close second.

10) What photo should we have added to Spotlight Seven that we missed.
There is a beauty in mistakes, a year ago I would have discarded this.

Brad Ross: Spotlight 7 Interview, Week 1

We're going to start archiving the Spotlight 7 interviews. Starting at the beginning, which featured Brad Ross for Week 1.

Welcome Brad Ross.

1) When did you first become passionate about photography?
Photography started for me when as a high school graduation present I got a Canon Rebel EOS. It started out as a hobby but quickly became an addiction when I began to understand how to use a camera not just on auto but in manual mode. Once I was able to shape my shots and not just point and shoot I knew I was hooked. People all see the world differently and photography lets me show people how I see the world.

2) When you take a portrait, what are you trying to achieve?
A portrait to me is all about the persons eyes. They can be smiling, crying or laughing but in the end it is the eye that tells the story. I try to focus on the eye and let that be the viewers guide to understanding more about the subject.

3) What's your favorite lens for portrait work?
Canon 70-200 2.8 IS. It just produces such crisp images alongside the famous Canon bokeh to really separate the subject from the background. I always have my eyes and wallet set on the 85mm 1.2.


4) Name one person who you'd love to photograph.
It might sound a bit morbid but I would love to take photos of Charles Manson. He has the scariest most ominous eyes I have ever seen on a person. It seems to me you could have him pose in a pink nighty with teddy bears and lollipops yet still know this man was pure evil. It goes to show how much the eye can tell you about a person.


5) Have there been any influences on your photography?
Jeff Mermelstein is a NYC street photographer who I just love. I envy his ability to just go out and shoot without the anxiety of getting in peoples faces to capture the beautiful shot. He says “Don’t think too much” is the key. -It’s got to be quick. Because if you don’t do it quick, then it’s gone - and then you’re really pissed." I have taken that to heart and have recently been going out to capture street scenes with this idea. There is a wonderful documentary about him on You Tube that is worth watching if you love street photography.


6) If you could only have one camera for the rest of your life, what camera would it be?
Who doesn't want a Hasselblad H3D-22?


7) Talk a bit about the photo of Ja Rule, how you got that shot?
Working in the radio promotion industry I am lucky enough to have occasions when artists come to my office to talk about their upcoming projects. The photo sessions we do with them are very impromptu and casual and the photo of Ja Rule shows this. What I love about this shot is his relaxed look and big smile that contradict his hard core image as a rapper.

8) What is it like photographing celebrities?
There is an excitement level when shooting a celebrity because you know the image will be seen by a larger audience. I do find that the raw emotion you get though is much better with your average person. Celebrities have been photographed so many times that they are numb to the camera and that emotion shows. For this reason I like to talk to chat them up about normal every day things to try and get them out of the routine mindset they might have about photo shoots.


9) Talk a bit about the Homeless man with the cat. Were you hesitant about that shot? Do you often photograph homeless people being a NYC resident?
I normally do not take photos of the homeless unless something about the scene really draws me in. In this case the similarities between the cats eyes and scruff perfectly matching that of the man were just too much to pass up. It's another case for me of what you can see in a persons eyes. In this case the cats eyes tell the same story as that of the man.... Hungry, tired, and lonely. I also find it important when taking pictures of homeless in the city to give them food and to talk to them after taking the pictures. In this case I returned later with some chicken McNuggets and a can of tuna for the kitty.


10) Which is your favorite of the 10 photos chosen for Spotlight Seven
On the corner. To me it is such a powerful image of NYC life showing how things are always moving around you even when you are not. I love the play between the red and green lights framing the man who though perfectly still is actually conducting business on his blackberry.

Misión

Reglas del grupo
1) Por favor respeta el tono del grupo, y a sus miembros.
2) Agrega tantas fotos como desees.
3) Cada foto debe incluir exáctamente una persona.
4) Por favor no envíes más de una foto por persona.
5) Sólo fotos tuyas, tomadas por tí o por familia o amigos.
6) Sin pornografía.
7) En algún momento, las fotos de este proyecto podrán ser utilizadas sin fin comercial, fuera de Flickr, para ayudar a promover y mantener el espíritu del grupo. Ninguna foto será utilizada con fines de lucro sin permiso explícito.
8) (Opcional) Por favor agrega la etiqueta "6 Million People" o 6MillionPeople a tus fotos.
9) (Opcional) Por favor agrega más y más fotos que cumplan con las reglas del grupo. Necesitamos que 60000 miembros agreguen 100 fotos cada uno. Será difícil, pero podemos hacerlo.
